At Moral IT, Principle consultant Martin and his team have worked on a range of award winning projects. Here we explore work in three different sectors.

  • Zero Carbon Britain

Originally Launched in 2007, 'Zero Carbon Britain' shows what Britain could look like. Initially a proof of concept, then developed into a whole system energy model including variability management, diet and land use. Creating a vision for the public and policy makers to let them see a sustainable option. After the 2010 report it won a renewable UK award for ‘outstanding contribution to public awareness of renewable energy’. It 'heavily inspired' the Liberal Democrats report of the same name. At the time they where the 3rd party in the UK.

Martin contributed to the 2007 report, was research director of the 2010 report launched at the All Party Parlimentary Climate Change Group and an economics contributor on the 2017 report. It was followed by work on OnePlanet Europe. Most recently, he has been contributing to the German environment agency’s latest research to update their EnergieWende decarbonisation scenario.

  • National University of Public Service (NUPS)

Developing curriculum, teaching undergraduates and conducting workshops were the key areas of work for NUPS.

Presenting on climate change to undergraduates through mixed media to increase student motivation. Animated time-series data, expert vidoes and a range of impacts of climate change from around the world.

Running a workshop on the use of public policy to support sustainability in the energy sector. Looking at the challenge of sustainability and what this means for policy. The framework used in the UK. National level successes and experiences followed by local level case studies. This was for experts in the field and through facilitated discussion we got experience from Spain, Germany, Estonia and the Netherlands to further the interactive learning experience

  • Solihull Council

Work with Solihull Metrobolitan borough council had two parts to, one on behaviour change and the other on carbon emissions.
For the first part, we organised an innovative workshop on behaviour change to highlight the potential for financial and carbon savings available. Using real world local examples of innovation to help mainstream these ideas to deliver wider benefit to the Solihull region. The workshop started with a quiz as an ice breaker, covered some communications theory and focused on three case studies.

For the second part, Martin combined financial, economic and business information to build insight on the Solihull profile of carbon emissions. Presenting this to the Sustianabilty Visioning group for Solihull which is a collection of high profile, innovative local businesses chaired by Jaguar Landdrover and including Lefarge Tarmac, international synergies, interserve and E H Smiths.

The presentation covered the context, both international and national to get the feel for what makes Solihull different. It then focused down at the emissions in Solihull’s commercial and industrial sector to make it more applied for a business audience. The case study demonstrated 70% reductions in 10 years from a similar sized innovation group. Where they found the economics benefits of distributed renewable energy generation. This then fed into the potential for strategic prioritisation via lowest carbon cost investments. Concluding the presentation with recommendations for the visioning group and wider region.
